(Update) 2 people shot at UAB; Gunman dead
Police confirm two people were shot Wednesday evening on the second floor of UAB Highlands Hospital in Birmingham before the shooter turned the gun on himself.
Lt. Peter Williston confirmed the gunman is dead.
The incident happened around or just after 7 p.m. Wednesday at the hospital located at 1201 11th Avenue South in Birmingham.
Capt. H.R. Watson of Birmingham Fire and Rescue told news reporters one victim was in critical condition with multiple wounds.
Police say the scene is secure and authorities issued an “all clear” alert about 7:45 p.m. after ordering students to shelter-in-place.
Al.com reports paramedics were entering the building through the same-day surgery entrance.
UAB Highlands is a campus of UAB Hospital, which is part of the medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
