Oil spill shuts down Hwy. 31 in Morris

A stretch of Highway 31 in Morris was shut down for about five hours on Thursday after a tractor trailer truck spilled oil on the road, covering both lanes.

Morris Police Chief Bryan Cochran said the driver of the tractor trailer tried to make a u-turn near Dollar General at about 1:40 p.m., damaging the truck’s oil pan in the process. The oil pan leaked seven to eight gallons of oil along a one-half mile length of road. Authorities shut down the road while County environmental workers, a company called One Stop Environmental and the Morris Fire Department cleaned the spill. They finished their work at about 6 p.m.

Nobody was hurt.
