Fultondale soldier gets educated, reports for basic

Pvt. Thomas W. Watson of Fultondale graduated with his GED diploma from the National Guard GED Plus program on Sept. 2 and has reported for Army basic training.

He attended Fultondale High School, graduating in 2006. But during the latter part of his senior year, his school counselor informed him that he would have to repeat his entire senior year.

According to Watson, the school did not have records to prove he completed the required coursework.

Devastated, he dropped out and decided he would go to work and earn his GED someday.

Watson said his entire department, along with Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery, supported his decision and even gave him a surprise going away party.

Watson reported for nine weeks of basic training followed by advanced individual training to become an Infantryman (11B) at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Upon graduation, he will return to serve with the Georgia Army National Guard’s 1st and 167th Infantry, B Co. in Pelham, Ga.

He is the son of Cheryl R. Sheffield and stepson of Louie H. Sheffield of Pinson.
