Center Point man holds off robbers with saw
A man turned back to juvenile robbers Thursday — with an electric saw.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Sheriff Randy Christian said two boys, ages 14 and 16, came up to a man who was painting his house in the 100 block of 27th Court NW in Center Point. They first asked the man for a drink, then one teen pulled out a gun and demanded the victim’s money and mobile phone.
The victim refused, and when the assailants started shouting and threatening him, the victim pointed an electric reciprocating saw at them. The assailants then took off. Meanwhile, a neighbor saw the incident in progress and called 911.
Deputies soon found the pair of would-be robbers a couple of blocks away. They returned the teens to the scene, where the victim identified both.
The 14-year-old is charged as a juvenile with first-degree robbery and being held in the Jefferson County Youth Detention Facility in lieu of $10,000 bond. The 16-year-old is being charged as an adult with first-degree robbery; he is still being held pending more formal charges, and his name has not been released. The older teen is believed to be the one with the gun, which turned out to be a BB pistol, Christian said.
