Rockets sweep Pleasant Grove tournament

Gardendale made a clean sweep of last weekend’s Pleasant Grove Tournament, beating Hewitt-Trussville 4-1 in the championship game Saturday.
Kellie Johnson’s double in the third inning scored Emily Dodson and Taylor Powell. Powell also doubled in the sixth and scored on a Sarah Williamson base hit for the Rockets (10-5).
Erica England also singled to right center, sending home Johnson, who had walked.
Hewitt’s run came in the first inning when Amanda Dailey singled home Kristi Morton..
Katie Argent (9-3) was the winning pitcher with six innings, four hits, 5 strikeouts and two walks. Jordan McCulley took the loss for Hewitt with four hits, 5 strikeouts and five walks.
• Gardendale 5, McAdory 0: The Rockets did all their damage in the first inning of the semifinal game, with Williamson’s two-run double being the big hit.
Johnson, Kayla Estes and Lindsey Blakey also drove in runs in the first.
Winning pitcher Jessica Carlisle went five innings with two hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
• Gardendale 2, Pleasant Grove 0: In pool play, Williamson drove in both runs, scoring Dodson on a sacrifice fly ion the first and a single in the fourth.
Argent gave up one hit in five innings with five strikeouts.
Gardendale 4, Sumiton Christian 3: The Rockets came from behind with two runs in the fourth inning to win their second pool game.
Estes scored on a fielder’s choice, and Johnson came home on a wild pitch that proved to be the game-winner.
Williamson also hit a run-scoring triple in the first inning.
The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the first inning.
Argent struck out seven and allowed two hits in four innings work.
• Gardendale 4, Bibb County 0:The Rockets scored three times in the third, including a double by Williamson that drove in Powell.
Argent fanned five and allowed two hits in five innings.
Springville Round-Robin
• Corner 7, Pisgah 5: Shannon Tolbert smashed a grand slam in the fifth inning that was the eventual winning play, ,as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Class 3A powerhouse Eagles in the first game of Saturday’s Springville Round-Robin Tournament.
Meg Adams also had run-scoring singles in the second and fourth innings, and Jeri Taft hit an RBI double.
Kortney Sloan gave up three hits over five innings, striking out eight Eagles.
• Springville 3, Corner 0: Tigers pitcher and Jacksonville State signee Savannah Henning kept the Jackets off balance the whole way with a wicked rise ball, as the eighth-ranked team in Class 5A scored all its runs in the first inning to shut out Corner.
Heather Anderson went the distance for the loss, giving up three hits and fanning five.
• Corner 6, Alexandria 1: Shannon Tolbert crunched a run-scoring triple, and Sloan added two RBIs as the Jackets upended the Valley Cubs.
Sloan (7-1) recorded five strikeouts with two hits.
REGULAR SEASON
• Corner 15, Ramsay 0 (3 innings): Heather Anderson was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, as Corner made very short work of the Rams, Winning on the 15-run rule in three innings.
Lindsey Cannon (2-0) struck out six of the 11 Rams she faced, and allowed two hits.
Preslie Cruce was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Jennifer Tolbert had a triple and scored twice.
• Corner 3, Oak Grove 0: Anderson struck out 17 Tigers in her complete-game shutout.
Cruce hit a triple in the seventh inning, and came home along with Anderson on Cannon’s single.
Cruce hit into a fielder’s choice in the third that scored Jennifer Tolbert.
• Springville 8, Hayden 1: Savannah Hennings allowed just two hits while she struck out 14 Wildcats, as the Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the second and cruised to the win.
Hayden’s only run came on a double by Madison Durham that scored Mara Conner in the first inning. But the Cats managed only one baserunner after that.
Hannah Butts (3-2) pitched three innings for the loss. Conner did four innings of relief work, striking out four.
JUNIOR VARSITY
• Hayden 10, Mortimer Jordan 4: Ashlan Dutton was a home run shy of the cycle, and struck out 11 Blue Devils in the Wildcats’ sixth straight win. Tiffany Ausborn was 3-for-4 with a double.
