PREP FOOTBALL: Muscle Shoals football program banned from 2016 playoffs

The Muscle Shoals and John Carroll football programs have been banned for the postseason this year, according to a press release distributed by the Alabama High School Athletic Association on Friday.

Both were cited for self-reported recruiting violations.

Muscle Shoals assistant Chris Balentine and John Carroll coaches Donald Cunningham and Arthur Stokes were suspended from coaching at any AHSAA school. Balentine’s punishment was set for a year, while the the John Carroll duo’s was unspecified.

The players involved were also deemed “permanently ineligible” at both schools.

Neither player was identified, though the investigation into Muscle Shoals stemmed from a quote in a Florence TimesDaily article about a lineman transferring from Wilson to the Trojans.

“They contacted me last year and talked to my dad about it,” Lex Morgan told the TimesDaily in January. “They convinced him about Muscle Shoals, and they convinced me to go there. … (My dad and I) got an apartment there about two weeks ago. It’s a nice town.”

The TimesDaily reported Morgan has since returned to Wilson.

Muscle Shoals, which has made the playoffs seven years in a row under head coach Scott Basden, and Cullman spent the last four seasons in the same region before the AHSAA’s latest reclassification. The all-time series is split at 7-7.
