66 candidates file for municipal elections
The race is on.
Tuesday at close of business was the deadline for candidates to qualify for the municipal elections on Aug. 28.
Two cities in the north Jefferson area — Kimberly and Brookside — will not be hosting municipal elections because only one candidate has qualified to run for each office, according to the city clerks in those cities.
In Brookside, Mayor Roger McCondichie and all five current council members are running for re-election with no opposition. Kimberly has some incumbents and some new faces who are running unopposed.
Hayden will host an election for mayor only, with incumbent Thelma Smith facing challenger Larry Armstrong.
In Morris, current council members Charles Ray Densmore and Joe Pylant threw their hats into the ring for mayor, and Robert Keith and John Dillard are both running for council place 5. All other seats are unopposed. Densmore and Pylant are the only current council members running for office in Morris.
Officials in Kimberly said the city would save about $6,000 by not holding an election.
However, the new council will still be required by law to have an organizational meeting in November to establish parliamentary procedure. In all cases, election or not, new elected officials take office on Nov. 3.
Warrior, Fultondale and Gardendale all have a full slate of candidates for mayor and council offices.
In Warrior, councilman Johnny Ragland will face Oscar Turner for mayor. All five council places also have two candidates each.
Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips will run for mayor again against former councilman William M. Flippo. There too, all five council places have multiple candidates.
Fultondale’s election will see Mayor Jim Lowery against John Douglas for the mayor position. Three of Fultondale’s council positions have multiple candidates, with two positions unopposed.
Runoff elections are Oct. 9, should they be required.
