County schools won’t make up severe weather day

Cullman County School students will not have to make up the day of class they missed earlier this month for inclement weather — even though the weather ended up cooperating.

Superintendent Shane Barnette said the State Superintendent’s office approved his request not to have to make up the day of classes missed on Friday, Jan. 6, when advance warnings of severe weather led local officials to cancel class for the day.

“I had submitted a waiver, and it came back as approved, so we will not have to make up that day,” said Barnette at the school board’s January meeting.

“I will say, though, that I found it humorous that, where I had to write in what happened on that day, I didn’t have anything to write,” he joked. “But the important thing is that we had our request approved.”

The board also passed the following items at its January meeting:

– Approved payment for staffing the 2016-2017 after-school program at Harmony School. Teachers Elaine Wren, Pam Mack, Monica Smith and Heather Lynn will be paid $15 per hour out of local funds.

– Approved a request from Fairview High School to pay Robert Strane $120 for running the game clock during middle school basketball games, to be paid by the Fairview Booster Club.

– Approved a request from West Point High School to pay non-faculty football coaches Bryant Farley, Tyler Hunt, Ryder Jones and Paul Quattlebaum a $250 supplement from the West Point Quarterback Club.

– Approved a request by Good Hope Middle School to pay James Ponder $80 for eight games and Eric Barnes $60 for 6 games for keeping the clock at the middle school basketball tournament. The funds will be paid by the Cullman County Middle School Basketball Association.

– Approved a request from Good hope High School to pay $125 to Sherry Blackwood out of local funds for cleaning the gym during the Christmas holidays.

– Approved a request from Good Hope High School to pay the following coaches for summer work out of funds from the Quarterback Club: Taft Dillashaw ($725), Chris Creel ($83), Eric Barnes ($400), Patrick McDonald ($1,475), and Tyler Hudson ($400).

– Approved a request to pay Kathy Day $13 per hour/game from Cullman County Basketball Association funds for keeping books at the county basketball tournament.

– Approved a request from Harmony School to pay the following stipends out of Title I Parental involvement funds: Elaine Wren, Monica Smith, Angela Baggett, Sherry Motes, Heather Lynn, Marta Dollar, Rhonda Bagwell, Carla Davis, and Ruby Reasonover. Each will receive $25 per hour for a two-hour “Fam Jam” event to be held Feb. 9.

– Approved the November 2016 financial statements.

– Approved the November 2016 bills and salaries. Bills for November were $5,392,379.16 and payroll was $2,746,632.32.

– Approved a request for a change order for the Holly Pond window replacement (phase 1). The change deducts $3,656.59 from the cost.

– Approved a request for a change order for the Vinemont Middle School re-roofing sales tax reconciliation for final pay request. The change deducts $1,892.17 from the cost.

– Approved a request from the Child Nutrition Program to pay the following workers their hourly rate for staffing the At-Risk program supper feeding at Hanceville cafeteria: Sonia Burgess, Keisha Wright, Miranda Pulliam, Janet Gaston, Elizabeth Busby, and Alicia Powe.

– Approved a request to increase reimbursements for overnight motel/hotel travel allowances from $150 to $225 per day, or the conference hotel rate, whichever is larger. The change applies only to in-state travel.

– Approved the following field trip requests, with no general fund money to be used: Vinemont High School basketball to Atlanta to watch the Atlanta Hawks play the Indiana Pacers; Holly Pond Middle School 6th grade science classes to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga; Parkside 8th grade to Six Flags in Atlanta; Good Hope High School math & science to Six Flags in Atlanta; and Holly Pond Middle School 7th grade science class to Six Flags in Atlanta.
