NJN/am for Tuesday, August 19
It’s Tuesday, can’t be too bad…
Weather: More rain, maybe. After heavy rain came through the north Jefferson area twice on Monday, we could see some more on Tuesday, but it’s less likely. Highs will be near 90 with a 30 percent chance of rain. Nighttime lows will be in the lower 70s with a 20 percent chance of rain. There’s a very slight chance of rain Wednesday with highs in the middle 90s.
Not in our back yard. Residents along Vann Drive confronted the Gardendale City Council during Monday night’s meeting, asking that they stop an effort by a developer to put a Tractor Supply Company store along U.S. 31, which would back up to their properties. The residents, who protested the plans at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting last week, told council members that the store — part of a nationwide chain that caters to farms and rural residents — did not meet the requirements of the existing C-2 zoning requirements, and that drainage problems could affect their properties in the case of heavy downpours. The matter hasn’t reached the full council yet, but President Stan Hogeland said that they were aware of the issues, and the “we will be all over this.”
Sports: USA Softball unbeaten at world championships. Former Mortimer Jordan star Haylie McCleney was 1-for-2 at the plate and scored a run, as the Unites States women’s softball team blanked Great Britain 11-0 in four innings at the ISF Women’s World Championship tournament in The Netherlands. In four games so far, Team USA has allowed just one run, that one scored by Chinese Taipei (Taiwan). McCleney is batting .400 since joining the national team in June. Today, the Americans face Australia.
