Five years ago
• The Northern Beltline and Corridor X highway projects are expected to propel growth into northern Jefferson County. The projects are still tied up in government red tape.
• For the second consecutive month, the City of Gardendale’s building inspections department sees a record of issuing residential building permits. They represent a construction value of more than $4 million.
• Local teens Jennifer and Allison Boffa, twin daughters of Bob and Bobbie Boffa, took part in an event in Montgomery that encourages people to adopt children.

• North Jefferson County schools will receive 28 more classrooms and get rid of portable trailers thanks to a $240 million bond. The local communities’ share of $29 million will allow needed work to be done at the schools.
• Adam Prestridge, a former correspondent for The North Jefferson News, has been hired as a full-time reporter.
• world.access advertised four years of internet with the purchase of a computer for only $59.95 per month. Both the laptop and the desktop had a 56K modem and featured the brand-new Windows 98.

• Hundreds of people lined the streets for the second annual Gardendale Christmas parade. It took a full hour for the parade to pass the reviewing stand and was noticeably larger than last year’s first parade.
• Mike Thrash was named as Warrior’s police chief at Monday’s meeting of the Warrior City Council. Thrash has been a part of the department for more than six years.
• A Sunday morning service dedicated new facilities that more than doubled the space for the activities of the Gardendale Church of the Nazarene.
30 years ago
• Charles M. Moore, a former Gardendale resident, was indicted on four counts of tax evasion in federal court in Birmingham. He is the owner of Moore Oil Co. in Cullman.
• The EMS of Fultondale has agreed to pay for surplus equipment that the City of Fultondale has received. There have been several discussions over who is responsible for the final bill for the emergency medical equipment.
• Amy Smith of Springdale was presented with a gift from the North End Council of Garden Clubs recently. She has been a member of the Springdale Garden Club for 46 years, thus is the oldest member of the North End Council.
