Former Mortimer Jordan quarterback Devlin Hodges wins national award

A former Mortimer Jordan football standout has won national honors on the college level.

Samford redshirt freshman quarterback Devlin Hodges has been named the STATS Football Championship Subdivision Freshman Player of the Week, the school announced Monday afternoon.

In last Saturday’s 47-21 win at Mercer, Hodges completed 30-of-44 passes for 392 yards and a touchdown. His scoring pass came on a school-record 94-yard throw to Emmanuel Obajimi in the fourth quarter.

In addition to his passing stats, Hodges also rushed 14 times for 88 yards in the game. He had a long run of 43 yards, and he finished with 480 yards of total offense.

For the season, Hodges is second in the Southern Conference in passing yards per game with 247.8, and in total offense with 284.1. He leads SoCon in pass efficiency (144.1).

Samford finished the season with a record of 6-5 overall and 3-4 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs posted a winning record for the fifth season in a row, tying a school record.
