District Attorney, Judge give students lecture on sex law
Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls and Family Court presiding judge Brian Huff spoke at Mortimer Jordan High School on Wednesday about the legal dangers of sending sexual material through cell phones and the Internet.
The act is nicknamed “sexting” by many law enforcement agencies, and Falls’ and Huff’s most stressed point during the speech seemed to be warning the 18-year-olds in the audience that they could be tried for sex crimes, even if they possessed or distributed a sexual image of a person only a couple of years younger than themselves.
“There’s no difference, in the eyes of the law, between you and the creepy 55-year-old guy in the trailer park,” said Huff to the crowd of high-schoolers.
Falls said a 16-year-old person can be tried as an adult for the charge of producing child pornography if they send a sexual image of themselves to someone else.
“There’s nothing in Alabama law called ‘sexting.’ It’s all child pornography,” said Falls.
