Good Hope to honor veterans with banners
GOOD HOPE — Residents of Good Hope who have family members who served in the armed forces may be able to get a banner in the city to honor their service.
The 24”x48” banners are available for family members who were killed in action, missing in action or a prisoner of war, and will be mounted on telephone poles at least twice a year.
Juanita Culler has spearheaded efforts to put up banners in Arley and Addison, and made a presentation to the Good Hope City Council on Monday night after City Councilman Maxie Jones saw the banners in Arley.
He wanted Good Hope to get them to honor its veterans and asked Culler to visit the City Council.
“I said if they could do it, why can’t Good Hope do it,” Jones said.
Culler said there is an application for family members to fill out that will need information about the veteran’s service. A photo will also be needed for the banner, but if there is not a picture of the veteran in uniform, any other picture will work as well, she said.
The banners and the hardware to hang them cost $125, but Culler said the prices are not intended for the cities to make a profit.
“It’s not a money making deal,” she said.
Good Hope Mayor Jerry Bartlett said the City Council thought the banners would be a good way to let the city recognize some of its veterans.
“We thought it looked nice,” he said. “We’d like to honor our veterans.
People who want a banner will have to pay the $125, but city employees will put them up and take them down, he said.
Bartlett said the city will make sure that the word gets out about the banners, and they will go to the local American Legion post and churches to let people know.
“It’ll kind of snowball once we get the word out,” he said.
