NJN/am for Tuesday, October 8

Hello, Tuesday…

Weather: Just like yesterday. It will be sunny; today’s high will reach the middle 70s, with lows tonight in the lower 50s. The trend continues through Thursday.

A raise for city workers. In Monday night’s meeting, the Gardendale City Council gave city employees a 1.7 percent cost of living adjustment in their pay, and also agreed to cover all of the increase in their health insurance plans, instead of just part of it as they had voted to do previously. Those measures were part of a meeting that was largely routine, but chock full of actions such as the passage of the city budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Digging in their heels. We are entering the second week of the partial shutdown of the federal government, and both House Republicans and Senate Democrats are sticking to their positions with no end in sight. Attention turns now to the federal debt ceiling, which will be reached net week of action is not taken by Congress.

Sports: Not-so-Hotlanta. It was a bad day to be a sports fan in Atlanta yesterday. In baseball, the Braves were eliminated from the playoffs with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the NL Division Series three games to one. Juan Uribe smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Dodgers the lead. Meanwhile in football, the Falcons saw their record fall to 1-4 after they were defeated 30-28 by the Jets on Monday Night Football. Nick Folk kicked a 43-yard field goal on the final play of the game to win it for New York.
