It’s Wednesday, otherwise known as Hump Day, so off we go…
Weather: Typical. We’re settled into the usual summer pattern of mostly sunny and warm today skies with a chance of scattered storms, with highs near 90, nighttime lows near 70 and a 20 percent chance of rain. The chance of storms increases on Thursday to 50 percent, with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the lower 70s.
From pink slips to pay hikes? In an unusual twist, some Jefferson County Schools workers who were facing layoffs two weeks ago may now be seeing bigger paychecks. Supt. Craig Pouncey proposed increased supplements for certain positions, including office coordinators and athletic coaches, during Tuesday’s committee meetings with the Board of Education. The reason: Neighboring systems were stealing those employees away with higher pay scales, forcing JefCoEd into a pattern of constantly replacing those staffers. The board will act on the proposal next week. In other moves, the board approved a bid for the construction of 10 new classrooms, in an attempt to alleviate an overcrowding problem that has plagued the school almost since its opening.
Homicide victim identified. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday that Rodney Canterberry, 42, of Dora is the name of the man found shot to death in a field near Morris. Canterberry died from multiple gunshots, and sheriff’s investigators are treating the case as a homicide.
Sports: Late comeback falls short. Never count out the Golden State Warriors, who were down by nearly 20 points in the third quarter, but scrambled back to close the margin to one point late in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. But the guy no one had heard of before this series – Matthew Dellavedova, replacing injured Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving – stepped up with 20 points and held Steph Curry at bay, as the Cavaliers won 96-91. LeBron James scored 40 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out eight assists. The Cavs take a 2-1 lead in the series, which resumes Thursday night (8 p.m., ABC 33/40).
