Town Square getting million-dollar makeover
A summer-long, $1 million facelift of Town Square Shopping Center is nearing the final phase.
Drinkard Development, the shopping center owner, has been improving the storefronts of each client, said Jason Grimmett of Drinkard Development.
Town Square Shopping Center, developed in 1965 by Roy Drinkard, houses numerous stores, including Hobby Lobby, Warehouse Discount Groceries, Office Depot, Goody’s, Hibbett Sports and others.
“It’s the first plaza Roy developed and it’s always full,” Grimmett said. “Of course, it has grown through the years and making the improvements to the facades is something we wanted to do for our clients.”
Drinkard Development is involved in commercial development in several states, including shopping centers and other businesses. Drinkard was among the area’s business leaders who formed the Flying Fifty years ago to recruit businesses and jobs to Cullman County. He recently celebrated his 99th birthday and remains active in all phases of his company.
The work also includes new signage at the main entrance along U.S. 31. The total project will be $1 million or more.
“At some stores we’re adding taller canopies that will give more visibility and overall improve the appearance for shoppers and the store owners,” Grimmett said. “When the work is finished, everyone will have a new roof and new facades.”
Drinkard Development also owns the Willkommen Center, which started in 2012, and the Marketplatz shopping district in Cullman.
