Enhanced garbage service attracts still more annexations for Pinson
Pinson’s new enhanced garbage pickup service continues to attract homes for annexation into the city.
The Pinson City Council OK’d the annexation of a total of 16 new homes in five separate votes during Thursday’s regular session. Nearly all wanted to get access to the new service, which the city contracted with Advanced Disposal this year.
The new service, with its distinctive maroon containers — meant to match the colors of Pinson Valley High School’s sports teams — started at the beginning of April.
“Most of these [annexation requests] are because of the garbage service, and we still have more to come,” Councilman John Churchwell said.
So far this month, 35 homes have been annexed into the city. As those annexation requests are made, adjacent residents who are still outside the city limits receive notice of those requests, and are also sent the forms needed so that they can also annex and get the new garbage service.
Councilman Joe Cochran said some outlying customers are still having a few problems getting proper service; such customers should call the company or City Hall.
Mayor Hoyt Sanders was absent from the meeting; he was acting in the PVHS drama department’s production of “High School Musical.” Mayor Pro Tem Dawn Tanner presided.
In other business, the council:
• heard from Councilwoman Joy McCain that the city’s bicentennial celebration on April 11 attracted an estimated crowd of more than 5,000 people
• announced a schedule of three films for “Movies in May,” which includes “Big Hero 6” on May 1, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” on May 8 and “The Lego Movie” on May 15, all at Rock School Center.
