Baseball: No. 6 Hewitt-Trussville 5, Gardendale 4 (10 innings)
Riley Stokes’ hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, as sixth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville clinched the area championship with a 5-4 win over visiting Gardendale in Thursday baseball action.
The winning hit was the only one for Stokes in five at-bats.
The extra innings came about thanks to a two-run hit by Dylan Oliver in the sixth inning to tie the game. Oliver finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate, as did Joseph Calvert.
Jacob Hallmark took the loss on the mound, pitching five innings in relief. He allowed three hots, two walks and two hit batsmen while posting one strikeout. Reliever Thomas Stinson got credit for the win for the Huskies (29-7, 6-0 area).
The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but moved up because of the threat of thunderstorms that day.
The Rockets (17-13, 3-2 area) can still make the playoffs if they defeat Huffman in one of two games next week.
