Texas farmer ‘shredded’ in gruesome bee attack
For the second time in a month, bees are being blamed for the death of a Texas man.
A farmer in the south Texas town of Lorenzo was “shredded” by a swarm of bees Sunday after disturbing a large hive with his tractor.
KGBT reports thats Rogerio Zuniga was plowing his field when the tractor struck an abandoned irrigation pipe located in a ditch that housed a large honeycomb.
San Benito Fire Department Chief Raul R. Zuniga Jr., Rogerio’s cousin, said that after the bees attacked, Zuniga “jumped off the tractor and ran about 100 yards away from the swarm before he collapsed in the field.”
Members of Zuniga’s family discovered his bee-covered body after noticing he was longer on the tractor.
“He had gaping wounds, the bees shredded him basically. It was horrible,” Lisa Zunia, Rogerio’s sister, sister told KGBT.
Raul Zuniga said exterminators found more hives near Zuniga’s home while eradicating the hive believed to have killed his cousin.
“We got help from the county and an exterminator, but we broke the concrete pipe to get into it. The thing was just filled with bees,” Raul Zuniga said. “They were extremely aggressive, too. One of the guys on my team got stung through his veil.”
On June 7, a man in Soda Springs, Texas was attacked by a swarm of bees while mowing his neighbor’s lawn. He died in an ambulance en route to the hospital.
