(Update) Hanceville council resolution calls for end of sports complex proposal
The Hanceville City Council approved a resolution Thursday opposing a proposed $30 million sports complex.
The council went into executive session to discuss possible litigation concerning the proposed sports complex announced last week by Cullman County School Superintendent Shane Barnette.
The $30 million complex would be located on a 58-acre tract off Alabama 157. The complex would include an indoor recreation facility, football field, tennis court and other facilities.
An executive session allowed by state law when names, character and some litigation issues are in question.
The announcement came last week a day after the Cullman City Council announced a planned $18-20 million indoor complex through Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism. The city has been working on the project for nearly four years.
Barnette has proposed that the complex will generate money for county schools and have initial funding from 15 percent of a half-cent sales tax for education passed by the Cullman County Commission and money from the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, which collects a portion of lodging tax.
