John Reed Akers Jr.
John Reed Akers Jr., born July 7, 1929, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2011.
He was preceded in death by parents, John Reed and Phoebe (Oden) Akers; brother, Ulyss (Madeline) Akers; sister, Gladys (Virgil) Cobb; and precious great-grandaughter, Katie Burkett.
John is survived by his wife, Glenda (McElvana) Akers; brother, Earney (Margie) Akers; daughter, Linda (James) Burkett; son, Randy (Patricia) Akers; granddaughter, Sissy (Donny) Headley; two grandsons, Mike (Shelley) Burkett and Jonathan Akers; four great-grandchildren; Josh Headley, Andrew Burkett, Jackson Burkett and Eden Burkett and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Gardendale First Baptist, retired from South Central Bell after 39 years, and a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers. John was also a veteran of the Korean War.
Some of his favorite pastimes were attending games of his grandkids and great-grandkids at the youth ballparks, where he was known as the Dollar Man. He served in the Civitans for over 55 years, Gardendale Zoning Board, Mortimer Jordan Alumni and enjoyed many hours working at GFBC Camp David.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Katie Burkett Scholarship Fund at Regions Bank.
Visitation will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Friday, February 25, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the funeral home starting at 11 a.m., with Brothers Leon Zalinski and Mark Harrison officiating and Camp David friends serving as pall bearers. Interment will be in Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
