Update: Corner tops Dora in rivalry game

CORNER—Friday night’s season opener was one anticipated by many.

The game went back and forth, but the Corner Yellow Jackets came through with a win over crosstown rival Dora, 21-14.

Shortly into the first quarter, Dora (0-1) held a 3-0 lead after Jackson Spradlin made a field goal. Corner’s Eric Millwood answered with a kickoff return for a touchdown, making the score 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Caleb Brasfield’s interception set the table for a Devne Daniel 25-yard touchdown toss to Kainen Jewell, which gave the Yellow Jackets a 13-3 advantage.

Dora quarterback Stone Smith later scampered 2 yards for a touchdown. Instead of kicking the extra point, Day Day Freeman ran in a two-point conversion for the Bulldogs. Corner ended the first half of the game with a 13-11 lead.

After Corner’s Ethan Creel secured a goal line tackle on Smith, Daniel ran the ball 20 yards to score the third and final touchdown for the Jackets, giving them a 21-11 advantage.

During the fourth quarter, the only scoring play was when Spradlin kicked another field goal for the Dora Bulldogs, bringing the tally to 21-14, which was the final score.

The home team went for 265 yards of total offense (205 rushing and 60 passing) while holding Dora to less than 150 yards.

Daniel led Corner with 154 yards rushing and a touchdown. He finished 6-of-8 through the air for 60 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Millwood made his mark on special teams for the Yellow Jackets, running back two kickoff returns for a total of 116 yards and a touchdown.
