Devils wear down young Cats

It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win for the Mortimer Jordan girls, and an improvement for Fultondale.

Peyton Davis scored 16 points and Haylie McCleney added 14 as the Blue Devils rolled 49-18 Monday night at Fultondale.

“It went like I thought it would, but we missed a lot of shots in the first quarter and had too many turnovers. Fultondale is very aggressive,” Jordan coach Marty Caldwell said.

The agressive play kept the young Wildcats within strking distance in the first quarter, during which 17 fouls were whistled on the two teams.

But the Devils put their game into gear in the second period, and scored 36 points over the next two periods while holding Fultondale to only two.

Davis, who picked up her third fould early in the second, pulled down 10 rebounds, and Brianna Nationa had six steals.

“Our defense was better, and our foul shots were better. It’s not great, but it’s an improvement,” Wildcats coach Melanie Gearhart said.

Wildcats guard Britani Howell led her team with nine points, despite sitting out much of the game after getting her fourth foul midway through the second quarter.
