Access to all

With the help of a $10,000 grant and local support, people of all physical abilities can now take in a game at Good Hope High School’s baseball field.

The field is the first Cullman County school to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines with new sidewalks and handicap parking. The project was funded with a $10,000 grant from Alabama’s Mountains, Rivers, and Valleys Resource Conservation and Development Council (AMRV RC&D).

A paved sidewalk was constructed around the backstop and concession facility and two handicapped parking spots were added to the gravel parking lot.

“Physically challenged fans now have a safe place to load and unload, as well as easy access to concession stands and restrooms,” said Mike Roden, AMRV RC&D executive secretary. “Thanks to these upgrades, attending games can be an easier and more enjoyable experience for everyone.”

In fact, officials reported improved attendance at games with the convenience of loading and unloading on pavement close to the playing field.

Roden said the improvements would not be possible if not for the support of the Cullman Soil and Water Conservation District and Rep. Corey Harbison, R-Good Hope. On Monday, Roden met with school and other local officials to deliver the $10,000 check for the project.
