2 men charged with drug trafficking after pursuit on I-65

An undercover operation by the Cullman Police Department Wednesday night led to charges against two men for drug trafficking.

Police reported buying 5.2 grams of heroin and 2.8 grams of cocaine during the investigation. Once the purchase was made, officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Devante Smith. The driver failed to stop and officers pursed the suspects south along Interstate 65 with assistance by the Warrior Police Department, according to a news release from the Cullman Police Department.

The vehicle was eventually stopped. The driver, Smith, was charged with trafficking in illegal drugs, two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, attempting to elude and reckless endangerment. His bond was set at $1.1 million, according to the release.

A passenger in the car, Jordan Evans, was charged with trafficking in illegal drugs and two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $1,040,000.

“I would like to thank the efforts of investigators Justin Craft and Scott Sanford for their work on conducting this operation. We do not want heroin, crack cocaine or any other illegal drug in our community, and our narcotic Investigators will continue to work diligently to pursue and arrest anybody dealing in illegal drug activity in our community,” said Capt. Becky Boyd in the news release. “I would also like to thank Warrior Police Department for their assistance in ending the pursuit and making the arrest.”

Anyone with information on illegal drug activity is asked to contact the Cullman Police Department at 256-734-1434 or 256-775-7170.

Smith and Evans are residents of Birmingham and both remained in the Cullman County Detention Center, Thursday.
