CULLMAN ELKS HOOP SHOOT: West Point’s Lamar, Fairview’s Golden earn Outstanding Shooter awards

West Point’s Jay Lamar and Fairview’s Lexi Golden nabbed the top prizes at the Cullman Elks local hoop shoot, which took place at Cullman Middle School last month.

Lamar made 22 of 25 free-throw attempts to claim the Outstanding Shooter award on the boys side, while Golden sank 19 of 25 from the charity stripe to notch the same honor on the girls side.

According to hoop shoot director Donnie Handley, more than 4,100 kids competed.

Each participating school in the area sent its best shooters to the annual event.

The Elks then narrowed the field down to six winners — a boy and a girl from three age groups.

This year’s individual champions were Vinemont’s Tucker Douglas and East Elementary’s Olivia Yeager (8- to 9-year-old); Parkside’s Konnor Dunkin and West Point’s Kelly Waters (10- to 11-year old); and Lamar and Golden (12- to 13-year old).

All six advanced to the district hoop shoot, which took place in Decatur in late January.

Waters finished first to advance to the state competition — slated for February 15 in Birmingham.

Lamar, Golden, Douglas and Yeager were second in their respective divisions, while Dunkin was third.

Lamar, however, will compete in the state event due to the first-place winner being unable to attend.
