STATE CROSS COUNTRY: Cold Springs claims county’s 1st-ever boys title; Lady Saints complete dream season with crown
MOULTON — Cold Springs’ boys went to Jared, St. Bernard’s girls lived on the Edge and both local cross country programs brought home blue maps on a historic Saturday at Oakville Indian Mounds.
Young guns Jared Stanley and C.J. Lang helped motor the Eagles to the first-ever state title by a Cullman County boys squad, while the Edge sisters, Ivy and Jaden, anchored a first-place performance good for the Saints’ first state crown in nearly 90 years.
St. Bernard’s only other championship came on the baseball diamond in the late 1920s, long before the Alabama High School Athletic Association started handing out hardware.
Stanley was one of the many boys who got his hands on Cold Springs’ blue map during a raucous awards ceremony. The sophomore cherished every moment.
“It feels great to be the first ones,” Stanley said of ending the county’s all-time title drought on the boys side. “We showed some people. We stood out today. I know we did.”
Stanley and Lang did their part to keep the Eagles’ score low with second- and sixth-place showings. The rest was left up to Kramer Crider (11th), Austin Burwell (12th) and Mason Harris (20th), who played the positioning game to perfection.
Crider (two) and Burwell (four) passed a combined six runners in the final 300 meters, and Harris staved off a pair of Westminster challengers after passing them around the 2-mile mark.
Every move made a world of difference in a championship clash that was decided by a slim two points. A year after roping in the red, runner-up trophy, Cold Springs was on the right side of a 45-47 “heavyweight fight” over Westminster.
Immediately upon learning his Eagles had pulled off the victory, beloved coach Clay Campbell jumpstarted a long-awaited celebration by leaping into assistant Tony Crider’s open arms.
Care to guess how Campbell was feeling?
“Like a state champion,” he said with an infectious smile. “We talked about it a long time. There were about four or five years there when Nick and Nathan (Lewis) were running that we got beat by six points three years in a row.
“Oh, we just wanted it and wanted it.”
St. Bernard’s girls got exactly what they wanted, too — a dream ending to a dream season.
Eighth-grader Ivy Edge started the party with a successful sprint for the individual championship, and big sister Jaden joined in with a fourth-place run to send the Lady Saints well on their way to the state title. Combined with quick contributions by Leahrose Mami (fifth), Ayleana Mami (16th) and Katelyn Cowie (28th), St. Bernard edged Westminster 48-54.
The result cemented a wire-to-wire campaign of championships for the Saints, who won all 11 meets they entered.
“They definitely deserve this,” coach William Calvert said.
Calvert, who’s enjoyed a long-and-storied coaching career, said he’d never been a part of a perfect season before. He also doesn’t come across many young runners with confidence like Ivy’s. Calvert noted that where most kids wilt — in mid-race, back-of-the-pack situations — Ivy thrives, keeping a level head until pushing toward the front near the end.
“That’s a really good sign that her mentality is the mentality of a champion,” he said. “She knows how to race at a young age, and that’s going to be dangerous for her competitors over the next four years.
“We know she’s really good, but we don’t know how good she’s going to be. She’s an awesome talent.”
The title was a fitting farewell for Ayleana Mami, the squad’s lone senior and one of the program’s two charter members. After taking home a pair of red maps her previous five falls on the trails, Mami didn’t let the the Lady Saints’ shiny new blue prize out of her grasp.
“This was the greatest way to end a cross country career,” she said. “This was the best season I’ve ever had. I wasn’t winning, but my team was, and that just made it the best.
“Everybody just did awesome. They did exactly what they needed to do — and then some.”
A single spot was all that stood between Mami and All-State status (top 15) for a sixth straight season. Calvert was far from distraught by the rare exclusion, however, pointing out Mami sacrificed her individual success for the greater good of the team. That often meant prematurely using up her reserves to pick off required competition.
“She’s been the heart of the program,” Calvert said. “I’m so happy that we could get this state championship with her name going on this trophy.”
The Times’ coverage area touted several other All-State runners, not to mention a number of exceptional team results.
The most notable local individual result was posted by Cullman’s Kyle Norris, who closed out a brilliant prep career with third in a highly competitive 6A field.
Joey Riggs sped to 11th for West Point, which wrapped up its first state meet seventh in 5A.
