CULLMAN COUNTY SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: Three teams still alive in suspended county tourney
COLD SPRINGS — Inclement weather continues to bedevil with its selfish ways.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms made another appearance on Tuesday afternoon, suspending the Cullman County Softball Tournament at Cold Springs for at least one day with the possibility of more on the horizon.
Although four games were played, the second semifinal between West Point and Fairview was postponed in the bottom of the sixth frame with the Warriors sporting a 9-4 advantage.
The two teams will attempt to resume play Wednesday at 9 a.m., with the winner playing Good Hope for all the marbles immediately afterward.
It has, to say the least, been a test of patience for coaches and players.
“I’ve never dealt with so many rain delays and figuring out things that pertain to games this season,” Aggie coach Brian Simmons said. “All of this weather has just been killer. They’re doing the best they can to try. Hopefully we can get these games in tomorrow.”
Added Warrior coach Kevin Sullins, “It’s been a weird year for really weird weather. We’ve missed 14 games and had plenty of delays. We’ll deal with this and try to come back and win it tomorrow.”
Complicating matters a little is the fact Cold Springs was all set to host the junior varsity county tournament — not to mention a pretty big area contest versus Falkville at 3 p.m. (one that must be played this week) — on Wednesday.
With the help of Mother Nature and a couple more umpires, all parties are hoping to use both fields to complete the necessary matchups.
Should rain wash away those hopes, however, defending-champion West Point would be awarded the win over Fairview and meet Good Hope in the title game whenever skies allow the two schools to do so.
“If it rains us out the rest of the week, I’m not sure what we’ll do then,” Sullins said. “That will pose a problem with area tournaments. We’d sure like to crown a true champion before then. No matter who that is.”
Fairview jumped out to an early 4-0 lead following Kayla Aleman’s RBI double and Carli Jo Ashley’s three-run homer in the first inning.
West Point bounced back, however, with nine unanswered runs to nab the lead before precipitation wreak havoc on the playing field.
Mallory Walker, Jeri Beasley, Karra Elam and Darana Campbell all had two hits and two RBIs through six frames, while Karli Beck added a long home run to left field. Kayla Sullins was good for two hits and an RBI.
Should the Warriors hang on for the victory, they’ll meet the Raiders, who defeated Vinemont 16-2 and Holly Pond 2-1 to notch their first visit to the title game since 2013.
Coach Wayne Harris is more than happy to wait out the weather for a chance at another crown.
“It’s a reflection of the girls’ hard work and determination to get back here,” he said. “It’s been a huge challenge for everyone with this rain in spurts. We’ll do our best to be prepared.”
% Good Hope 2, Holly Pond 1: Josie McDonald scored on an error late to secure a spot in the championship game for the Red and White.
MaKailey Speegle collected two hits, while Skylar Tucker came through with a huge RBI double for Good Hope. Erika Woodall added a single.
McDonald surrendered eight hits and struck out two in the win.
Presley Marks, Shelby Lynn and Kolby Holcombe (RBI) tallied two hits for Holly Pond, while Adair Gillilan and Taylor Tankersley each collected one in the loss.
% Holly Pond 7, Cold Springs 6: The Broncos delivered the first upset of the tourney, shocking the Class 2A No. 10 Eagles to nab a spot in the semifinals.
Tankersley had four hits, two RBIs and two runs in the tight victory for the Green and White, while Katie Burnham and Holcombe each collected three hits and two RBIs.
Gillilan, Taylor Oslin and Maddie Folds also had singles for Holly Pond.
Junior Meagan Quick secured the win with a complete game showcase, striking out two Eagles with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
“The game was real close, but our girls were determined to pull it out,” coach Chad Folds said. “It was a true team effort. I was proud of the Lady Broncos for getting the win.”
Kelsey Hester and Rilee White recorded two hits each for Cold Springs, while Hannah Wilson, Bailey West and Victoria Freeman roped one.
% Good Hope 16, Vinemont 2: The Raiders opened tourney play in strong fashion with a three-inning victory over the Eagles.
Derekia Tankersley and Morgan Goodwin each walloped three base hits, while Speegle, McDonald, Woodall and MyKale Lowe tallied one apiece to lift Good Hope to the runaway win.
Lowe notched the win, allowing two hits and striking out three batters.
Stats for Vinemont weren’t available.
% Fairview 15, Hanceville 0: The Aggies came to play early against the Bulldogs, dominating their county foe in a three-inning affair.
Jada Golden and Jordan Moore came through with a couple of hits and two RBIs each, while Harley Jo Gibbs (two hits), Gracie Cook (two RBIs) and Kaylnn Holcomb (one hit, three walks) also contributed.
Aleman, Ally Hogeland, Desiree White and Ashley added singles in the victory. Ashley struck out two and allowed zero hits on the mound.
