Property tax deadline spikes traffic at revenue office

With the year-end deadline looming for property tax payments, the Cullman County Revenue Office is a lively place this week.

The revenue office was busy Wednesday taking end-of-year payments, processing dozens of walk-ins, mailed and online payments at the Cullman County Courthouse.

By 2:30 p.m., the revenue office had already taken in $470,000 in payments for Wednesday alone.

So far, 2016 has seen a dip in property tax revenues for Cullman County, with a year-to-date total of $18,840,000 collected as of Wednesday afternoon. For the same period last year, the revenue office had collected $19,015,000.

Revenue Commissioner Barry Willingham said that’s not enough of a difference to inform any speculation about where this year’s overall collection totals will fall.

“December up until the end of the year is a busy time,” said Willingham. “A lot of the numbers we will see, right up to the last day, can be influenced by which day of the week the deadline falls on. Until then, traffic is constantly changing, and you never know what’s going to walk through the door.”

Property owners in Cullman County have only a few days left to get their property tax payments turned in to beat this year’s deadline.

Ad valorem property taxes come due each year beginning Oct. 1, and can be paid without additional fees or penalties through the end of the calendar year. For 2016, that means getting your postmarked payments in the mail no later than Saturday, Dec. 31.

Because New Year’s day falls on a weekend this year, landowners planing to remit their property taxes in person will have until Tuesday, Jan. 3., when the revenue office reopens from the holiday break.

Willingham said the office will accept payments all the way through the Jan. 3 business day, and can be submitted at the Cullman County Courthouse or the revenue office’s satellite locations at Baileyton, Dodge City and Hanceville.

Beginning Jan. 4, unpaid property taxes will be delinquent, and will begin to incur penalties and interest.
