CULLMAN COUNTY GOLF TOURNAMENT: Hanvey, Aggies on top after Day 1; Mullican leads girls field

FAIRVIEW — Despite two bogeys on his closing three holes, Fairview’s Trey Hanvey shot a 1-under round of 70 at Chesley Oaks to secure a five-shot lead after Day 1 of the Cullman County Tournament on Wednesday

The Aggie senior sits five strokes clear of teammate Seth Lancaster (75) and nine ahead of Good Hope’s Cole Pearson (79) entering Thursday’s final round at Cullman Golf Course.

“I hit the ball pretty decent,” Hanvey said. “A couple of bad swings for me. Some bad putts, too. Hopefully I’ll roll it a little better tomorrow and close it out.”

Hanvey and Lancaster spearheaded Fairview’s squad score of 304 for a whopping 96-stroke cushion over second-place Good Hope (400). Hunter Whitehead (79) and Hunter McKelvy (80) rounded out the Purple and Gold’s top scores.

Josh Cofer (97), Tyler Wilson (109) and Riley Eisner (115) accompanied Pearson, the Raiders’ No. 1. West Point (408) and Hanceville (485) are a distant third and fourth, respectively.

Although he’ll be moving to another course on Thursday, Hanvey said it’s not going to be a problem for him in terms of preparation.

“Golf’s golf,” he said. “You’ve got to hit shots and make putts. Doesn’t matter where at. I just want to go out there and play the best possible for my team and have a good score.”

Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust shot an 84 as an individual.

On the girls’ side, Fairview’s Dalys Mullican (85) owns a small cushion over over defending champion Lindsey Rodgers (89) of West Point.

The Aggies hold a substantial advantage (273 to 379) versus the only other girls program, Hanceville. Maci Yeager and Ana Dahlke (91 and 95) finished with a pair of strong rounds to help the cause for Fairview.

Mullican is excited to be in the mix.

“It’s fun,” she said. “I didn’t play real well at Cullman the other day, so I’m hoping for some revenge. Lindsey is a competitor, though. I’m all but ready to be out there and play.”

Thursday’s round will get underway at 1 p.m.
