CULLMAN COUNTY TOURNEY (JV BOYS): Kent’s late free throws seal 46-42 win vs. Broncos, Warriors’ 2nd title of day

HANCEVILLE — West Point was the second seed and Holly Pond was No. 1, but Saturday’s 46-42 win for the Warriors was no upset.

Cameron Moore was a 3-point machine, Seth Parker worked the paint for all 10 of his points in the first half and Brady Kent came up clutch in crunch time, helping West Point hold on in a nail-biter for the Cullman County Basketball Tournament junior varsity boys championship.

The Warriors finished the season 22-2. They came just three points away from a perfect campaign, losing to Holly Pond by one and Russellville by two.

The Maroon and White beat the Broncos decisively in the most recent matchup, but coach Scott Brown still expected a battle Saturday at Wallace State. Boy, did West Point get one, receiving Holly Pond’s best shot until the bitter end.

Michael Lambert and Dawson Foust combined on a trio of treys — both of Lambert’s came from the corner and Foust’s was well behind the arc — to pull Holly Pond within one on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter. From there, it was a race to the finish, with both squads receiving numerous scoring opportunities but ultimately failing to capitalize.

Brandon Farley made a free throw with 14.3 seconds left to put the Warriors up 44-42, the same advantage they held when Kent was sent to the charity stripe nearly 10 seconds later.

Kent admitted he “might’ve gotten the shakes a little bit,” but it didn’t show. He calmly stepped up to the line and tickled the twine on both attempts to put the title on ice.

“It was all put on my shoulders to lift our team, but it was the rest of my team that already pulled us through the whole game,” Kent said. “I did my little part at the end to put us over the top, but it was mostly just a team effort.”

Aside from a hustle rebound inside the final minute, the two points made up the majority of Kent’s contributions. They were an important two points, though, especially considering the teen’s limited time on the floor because he’d been out sick the previous two days.

“It was a situation where he hadn’t played a lot of minutes in today’s game, but what he did do was big,” coach Scott Brown said. “I was very proud for him to step up and do that.”

Kent was far from the only West Point player he was proud of.

“They made two or three really good runs at us, but we persevered through it,” Brown said. “Probably could’ve panicked a little bit there, but I didn’t think we really did. We just kept playing and were able to finish it.”

Moore capped off an All-Tournament Team performance with four treys and a game-high 16 points. Kent made the final free throws, but even he felt Moore made the biggest difference in the Warriors’ success this winter.

“It’s very nice to have a player on your team that you know can come out every night and knock down big shots to make our team a little bit better than all the rest of the teams,” he said.

The only other West Point player in double figures was Parker, who also notched an arrangement of rebounds and blocks. The 15-year-old, who’s already 6-foot-5, was on Cloud 9 after taking in his first county championship experience.

“It feels really good,” Parker said. “It’s what you try to work for all season.”

Brandon Farley filled the stat sheet with nine points for the Warriors, while Alex Hernandez picked up six and Matthew Daniel, three.

Foust topped the Broncos, whose only two losses this season were to West Point, with three 3’s and 12 points. Lambert followed closely with 10 points. Dylan Morton and Tanner Duke added eight apiece, and Kelby Alexander and Caleb Jones both had two.

Parker and Hernandez were West Point’s other representatives on the All-Tournament Team, which also featured Holly Pond’s Morton and Jones. Cold Springs’ Eli Hamby and Hanceville’s Tyler Turner rounded out the honorary squad.
