“Come on down!”
The next model on “The Price is Right” could be a Corner resident.
Amanda Shiflett, 19, will have the opportunity to showcase items on the popular daytime game show Oct. 20 through Oct. 24 as part of a contest. The winner will be announced Nov. 7.
The outgoing teen, a self-described “all-around American girl,” found out about the opportunity through her grandmother, who saw a television ad and urged her to try her luck.
The audition, held in mid-August at WaterMark Place in Bessemer, led to a trip to Hollywood last month, where she watched a live taping and got to meet host Drew Carey. The show called back five of the 13 women who auditioned, including Shiflett.
“The whole experience has been absolutely amazing,” she said. “I had never been on a plane before, so that was exciting.”
Shiflett, who said she likes to hunt and fish, said Hollywood was very different from her hometown. She was especially disappointed that she could not find any sweet tea.
Though a fan of the MTV show “The Hills,” she said she was still impressed by the sights of the city. “I’m kind of hooked on that show,” she said. “When I saw the Hollywood hills, the houses were just huge. It was beautiful.”
Though she had seen “The Price is Right” before, she said she has been “watching it like crazy” since coming back from Hollywood.
“Modeling is harder than you think,” she said. “Most people think it’s just about standing up there and pointing.”
Shiflett, a nursing student at Wallace State in Hanceville, has also worked as a veterinary technician at Mercy Animal Hospital in Gardendale for the last seven months.
“I’ve always wanted to be a neonatal nurse,” she said. “I feel like right now I play the role of a nurse, but it’s with dogs and cats.”
In addition to her supportive family, Shiflett has also received plenty of support from her employer. The sign in front of the animal hospital reads, “Home of the next Price is Right model.”
Shiflett’s boss, Miranda Trammell, D.V.M., described her as “very outgoing and spunky” and just a good person.
“We’re just trying to get the word out to our clients to vote for her while she’s on the show,” Trammell said. “We’re even giving her the day off so she can fly to L.A.”
Shiflett said she didn’t know what would come out of “The Price is Right” experience, but she said it’s one she would cherish.
“Even if I don’t make it, hopefully something else will come from it,” she said. “It could be a new beginning. Who knows which way it’s going to go.”
“The Price is Right” airs Monday through Friday on CBS 42 (WIAT) at 10 a.m.
