Corner wins twice in Tuscaloosa tourney

On Friday night, the Corner Lady Yellow Jackets won their first two games of pool play in the Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa tournament. In 2007, Corner reached the tourney semi-finals and with their two wins put themselves in good position to reach the semi-finals again.



Corner 13,

Holy Spirit 0


Heather Anderson (1-0) threw a one-hitter and struck out eight to pick up the win.

Senior shortstop Haley Anderson did most of the damage at the plate, as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. She drove in three four runs and scored twice.

Preslie Cruce went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jennifer Tolbert went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.



Corner 5,

West Blocton 1


Kortney Sloan p (1-1) picked up the win for Corner (4-1) with a four-inning one-hitter. She struck out four and walked none.

At the plate, Cruce went 1-for-2, Mandy Slatton went 1-for-1, Elizabeth Allred went 1-for-2 and Jennifer Tolbert went 1-for-1.

Corner will resume play this morning at 10 a.m.



Softball:

Gardendale 6,

Hewitt-Trussville 1


Gardendale’s Katie Argent (1-0) threw a complete game three-hitter, walked five and struck out two, while allowing only one earned run to record the victory for the Lady Rockets.

At the plate, Beth Erwin went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. She crushed a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Kaitlyn Casaday went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs. Kendall Thomas went 2-for-4, including a two-run homer in the first inning.

Kellie Johnson had a base hit, Kayla Estes walked and scored one run.

Delena Kennedy went 3-for-3 with one run scored and Lauren Ellis reached base after being hit by a pitch and came around to score one run.

The win upped Gardendale’s record to 3-0.

Walker 1


Elizabeth Allred threw a no-hitter. (See page B1 for the story)

At the plate, Preslie Cruce was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Haley Brown was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Corner improved to 2-1.

Friday night:



Gardendale 1,

Moody 1 (tie)


The timer ran out Friday night on Gardendale and Moody in the Alexandria tournament and both clubs will be credited with a win in pool play, which resumes this morning at 9 a.m.

The tournament playoff games begin at 12 p.m.

Kendall Thomas pitched a complete game allowing three hits, striking out six and allowing only two walks and one earned run.

She surrendered a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Rocket tied the game in the fifth inning when catcher Taylor Powell singled and moved to third on a fielders choice by Megan Poe. Powell then scored as Kaitlyn Casaday reached base on an infield hit.

Baseball:



Gardendale 11,

Vestavia Hills 0


The Rockets’ David Roberts (1-1) threw a two-hitter and walked only one to pick up the win. He struck out five during his quick shutout gem. The game lasted only 58 minutes.

At the plate, senior Cameron Brewer went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Catcher Andrew Busby went 2-for-3, including smashing a three-run homer in the third inning. Josh Headley went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

In the JV game, Gardendale came from behind to win 5-4.
