A Corner teen is still tackling her day-to-day duties, despite winning a national television contest.

Amanda Shiflett, 19, won “The Price is Right” modeling contest two weeks ago after receiving the most votes. Her victory was publicly announced last Friday.

Shiflett, a sophomore at Wallace State Community College pursuing a nursing degree, also works at Mercy Animal Hospital in Gardendale as a veterinary technician.

“It feels pretty cool that out of all those girls, they picked me,” she said.

As the winner, she taped an additional five episodes of the CBS game show which will air Jan. 12-16.

Her mom, Wendy Phillips, said she and the rest of the family were extremely proud of her win and said her daughter may now give show business a try.

“It’s hard for a teen to know what she wants to do when she grows up,” Phillips said. “I think she’s wanting to do something in entertainment now. Now she has a foot in the door and I’m thankful she had this opportunity.”

Shiflett will soon tape a commercial for CBS and she will appear today at the Birmingham Auto Show at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Complex from noon to 2 p.m. signing autographs.

She said she’s still not used to the attention she’s received since winning the contest. “I get people saying, ‘You’re “The Price is Right” girl’ and that still feels kind of weird.”

Her journey to “The Price is Right” began in mid-August when she tried out for an audition for the show at WaterMark Place in Bessemer. After a successful audition, she went to Hollywood and met host Drew Carey.

Phillips said her daughter hasn’t let her new-found success change her. “It will never go to her head,” she said.

“The Price is Right” airs Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. on CBS.
