Softball: Corner 3, Pinson Valley 1

Pitcher Madison McCormack struck out 11 Pinson Valley batters, as Corner took advantage of a couple of miscues in the third inning to take a 3-1 softball win Monday.

The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with the first three batters on a hit batter, a fielder’s choice on a bunt where both runners reached safely, and then a walk. Bailee Hammock drove in a run on a single to left field, another run scored when McCormack’s fly ball to center field was dropped, and Hannah Reeder sent home the third on a sac-fly to center.

Pinson took the lead early when Lauren Tralongo’s fly ball to left was misplayed. She moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a single by Kelsey Price.

Aside from the one bad inning, Indians sophomore pitcher Tristen Griffith had a good outing, striking out five while allowing five hits. McCormack allowed four hits and just one walk for Corner.

Emmie Waldrop was 2-for-3 at the plate for Pinson, as was Hammock for Corner.

The victory came in the Yellow Jackets’ first completed game of the season, after the scheduled opener with Gardendale last Friday was suspended because of rain. (That game was to be finished Wednesday, but that has now been called off and a new date not yet set.)

Pinson (1-1) travels to Locust Fork on Tuesday.
