It’s Friday, and all the people cheered…

Weather: Drenching rain on the way. But first we’ll have another gorgeous day, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the lower 80s, and nighttime lows in the lower 60s. Saturday will start out nice, much like today, but clouds will move in as the day goes into night and showers will start after midnight. The rain really kicks in on Sunday, with highs only reaching the middle 70s. We could see as much as three inches of rain before it all ends on Monday.

Amee Donald switches jobs. Most folks locally know her as the director of the Greater Gardendale Chamber of Commerce, but Donald is leaving that position to become the executive administrative assistant for the new Gardendale City Schools. She was chosen from among 60 applicants at the board of education’s meeting Thursday night. Donald’s selection wraps up the hiring of the leadership team to move the system through next spring.

Old Corner, Warrior schools to be demolished. The Jefferson County. Board of Education voted Thursday to tear down the original portion of Corner School, which dates back to the 1920s, as well as the old gymnasium. The board also approved the demolition of the old Warrior Elementary School, which was originally built in the early 1960s as the local school for African American students in the days of segregation. Additionally, the board declared Jimmie Trotter Stadium, the longtime football field at the original Mortimer Jordan High School, as surplus; it will remain standing and be sold. The full story on all of the board’s action comes later today.

Sports: Couldn’t have scripted it better. Derek Jeter closed out his career at Yankee Stadium just like a future Hall of Famer should: by hitting a walk-off single to right field to win the game for the Bronx Bombers on Thursday night. “The Captain” declared afterward game that the game would be his last to play at shortstop; he’ll play in the Yankees’ season-ending series at Boston in another position, presumably as designated hitter… Football: It’s another slate of high school football tonight, and the NJN Big Game this week features fourth-ranked Mortimer Jordan hosting John Carroll Catholic for homecoming. There’s also McAdory at Pinson Valley, Minor at Gardendale, Fultondale at Alabama Christian, Hayden at Lawrence County, Corner at Oak Grove, Center Point at Parker, Tarrant vs. Ramsay at Lawson Field in Irondale, and Tabernacle Christian hosting Tuscaloosa Christian (8-man). Locust Fork has a bye week. As always, we’ll have all the action wrapped up late tonight at njeffersonnews.com.
