Jeff Smith is out as Corner athletic director and football coach

Corner head football coach and athletic director Jeff Smith is being replaced in that position.

Smith confirmed Friday that he would no longer hold the position as of the end of the school year. He declined to comment on whether his departure was a resignation on his own, or whether he was asked to leave. He currently retains his position as girls basketball coach.

“I think in terms of my future, there’s a lot to be determined,” Smith said Friday. “I’ve enjoyed my time as a head coach at Corner. There’s been some lean times, but I think as we move to the future, some of the younger players coming show promise.”

Corner High Principal Ronald Cooper said that interviews of candidates concluded Thursday.

“We’ve narrowed it down to one individual,” Cooper said. “The Board of Education will discuss [the choice] at their meeting next Thursday, and we’ll know what they will do by Friday.”

Smith served as offensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets for one season, and was head coach and athletic director for the past two years.
