Corner 48, Sumiton Christian 27: Cummings’ big night pulls Jackets even

Corner finished off its season Friday with a 48-27 victory over Sumiton Christian to close with a 5-5 record.

The first half was fairly close, with the Eagles’ Josh Rouse scoring first on a 52-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Corner answered with an Aaron Cummings eight-yard run with 1:17 in the first, followed by a Sumiton Christian field goal and touchdown in the second quarter.

With 20 seconds left in the half, the Jackets cut the spread with a two-yard run by Jarred Causey. The half ended with the Eagles ahead, 17-14.

Sumiton Christian kept their momentum in the third quarter, with a 13-yard run by Rouse, only to see Corner’s Blake Byrd come back and score on a 1-yard run.

The Eagles scored another field goal with 4:39 in the third.

Corner commanded the fourth after tying the game at 27 with 11:27 in the final quarter with a one-yard run by Byrd.

The Jackets then ran in three more touchdowns to finalize their victory: a 25-yard pass play from Nick Webb to Byrd, a 54-yard run by Cummings, and a 25-yard score by Adam Hambright off of an intercepted pass.

The Jackets offense had a total of 446 yards, including 277 rushing yards and 169 passing by Byrd on 17 attempts, with one interception and one TD pass.

Aaron Cummings had 18 carries and 153 yards.
