Blue Devils respond in crucial region game

CORNER—It was a fast start that sent Mortimer Jordan home with a 31-10 region win at rival Corner on Friday night.

Most of the Blue Devils’ damage was done in the first quarter, as they found the end zone with their first three possessions of the night.

Sophomore quarterback Kourtlan Marsh got things started with a short dump into the flat. Converted basketball player Justin Anderson did all the work from there, making a man miss and gliding 85 yards down the sideline for a 7-0 lead after Mortimer Jordan’s first play from scrimmage.

“That was a little RPO,”said Mortimer Jordan head coach Dusty Goode. “Justin [Anderson] made a great catch and did what he’s suppose to do: score.”

That wouldn’t be Anderson’s last trip to the end zone. Again, he showed his big-play ability on a jet sweet, which he ran in from 26 yards out. That run capped a 10-play drive, giving the visitors a 28-3 cushion with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter.

“Justin is a dynamic player. He’s explosive. He can score any time he touches the ball,” said Goode. “He’s a great basketball player at Mortimer Jordan and that’s why I’m so excited for this school. All of the coaches work together and share athletes and Justin is going to make us better.”

While Anderson did his work on the perimeter, fullback Colby Harris ran for the hard yards up the middle. The senior carried it 18 times for 87 yards, as Mortimer Jordan bled the clock.

Fellow Blue Devil running back Daniel Franklin didn’t get that workload, but the junior ran two of his three carries in for touchdowns on Friday night. He scored from four yards out on their second drive of the game, and bounced right back for a 10-yard score just two minutes later.

“I’m really proud of our guys. I think we grew up a little bit tonight, and we need games like this if we want to do the things that we want to do this season,” said Goode. “Corner’s a scrappy bunch and they played awful well.”

The Yellow Jackets (2-2, 1-1) showed fight in the second half. Junior running back Garrett Purvis scored on Corner’s final play—a 29-yard gallop right up the middle. He finished up with 11 carries for 74 yards, including the 29-yard touchdown.

Also for the Jackets, senior Hunter Whitburn ran it 10 times for a total of 60 yards, 55 of which came in the second half. Corner kicker Chase Jones swung true on a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter.

For Mortimer Jordan (3-1, 2-0), kicker Feriam Sanchez connected on a 36-yard try midway through the final frame.
