Baseball: Corner sweeps tri-series with Mortimer Jordan, Chelsea

Corner got the best of raw wintry conditions to win both of their games in a baseball tri-series with Chelsea and host Mortimer Jordan on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets defeated the Hornets 4-2 in the middle game, even though they recoded only four hits. Fielders had problems all day handling plays as the snowflakes fell around them, and only one Corner run was earned.

Kerry Smith hit a run-scoring double in the third inning, then scored what proved to be the winning run on an error.

Cole Lepchitz also had a double for the Jackets. Pitcher Cody Gilbert got the win.

In the opening run, Jordan committed seven error, five of them in one inning alone, but still managed to find a way to beat Chelsea 8-7 in eight innings. Sam Blair drove in the winning run with a single that brought home pinch runner Kyle Woods.

Blair was 3-for-5 for the game with a double and three RBIs. Taylor Goodwin was 3-for-4 and also brought in three runs, and Orion Recke hit 2-for-3, scored twice and knocked in a run.

David Shoemaker was 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Hornets.

Nathan Stover got the win in relief of Ty Miller, working 3-2/3 innings. He gave up just two hits and no runs. Reliever James Calhoun was tagged with the loss for Chelsea.

In the nightcap, Corner ended the Blue Devils’ season-opening winning streak at 11 games, thanks to an 8-4 victory.

Lepchitz hit two doubles in four at-bats, driving in a pair of Yellow Jacket runs.

Garrett Suchey went 3-for-4 with a double for Jordan.

Starter Chase Best got the win for Corner, giving up three jits and two earned runs while striking out three in 4-1/3 innings. Jordan starter Taylor Goodwin was chased after 2-1/3 innings, yielding five runs (four earned) on three hots plus four strikeouts.

Jordan travels to Corner Monday afternoon in the opening game of the Jefferson County Tournament.
