Baseball: Corner sweeps tri-series with Minor at Fultondale
Corner swept both of its games in a baseball tri-series on Saturday at Fultondale, defeating Minor 10-7 and routing the host team 13-1 in six innings.
In the opening game against the Tigers, the Yellow Jackets jumped ahead with a four-run second inning, capped by a two-run double by Kerry Smith.
Blake Byrd added a single in the fourth that drove in two runs, and the Jackets scored twice in the sixth on wild pitches.
Seth Merchant went 3-for-3 for Corner, and scored three runs. As the starting pitcher, Merchant gave up four hits in 3-1/3 innings, striking out three. Josh Walker pitched 2-2/3 innings in relief, with two hits and three K’s.
In the nightcap, the Jackets scored six runs in the second inning to put the game largely out of reach. Jack Robbins drove in two with a double, Smith plated Robbins with an RBI single, Dillon McCaleb brought home Smith with a double, and two more scored when Kevin Bryant hit into an outfield error.
Corner added five more in the sixth, capped by a two-out Smith triple that brought home two runs.
Antwan McCary drove in the Wildcats’ lone run with a single in the third, scoring Julian Hardy.
Chris Huff went the distance for the Jackets, striking out nine while giving up five hits. William Cassidy went all six for the Cats in the loss.
