Good Wednesday morning to you…

Weather: Get out the sunglasses. Today and Thursday will be the warmest days around here for quite some time, with sunny skies today and highs in the upper 80s. Lows tonight will be in the middle 60s. Rain starts to move in on Thursday with a 30 percent chance of showers and highs in the upper 80s.

Shooting victim had local ties. Remember last week’s tragic shooting at the United Parcel Service facility near the Birmingham Airport? We’ve since learned that Brian Callans, one of the two UPS managers who was shot and killed by a driver who was fired the day before, was from Mt. Olive and graduated from Gardendale High School. Read about Callans in today’s print edition of The North Jefferson News, and later today at njeffersonnews.com.

Ebola has arrived. The first person inside the United States to have the deadly Ebola virus has been diagnosed in in Dallas. The Centers for Disease Control said the person arrived on Sept. 20 from Liberia and did not have symptoms of the virus on arrival, but developed symptoms a few days later. The patient has been placed in isolation and remains in critical condition. The CDC said others on the flight from Africa have “zero chance” of contracting the virus because the patient showed no symptoms at that time.

Sports: Record ranking. The weekly Alabama Sports Writers Association’s high school football rankings are out, and Mortimer Jordan has reached the number-three spot in the Class 5A top 10 this week. That ties for the highest that the Blue Devils have ever been ranked; they reached third more than a dozen years ago, as well as in 1995. Jordan is the only local team ranked; Fultondale received a few votes in Class 3A… Baseball: Kansas City would simply not go away, as Salvador Perez hit a walk-off single down the third base line to push the Royals to a 9-8 win in the 12 innings over Oakland in the American League wild card playoff game. Tonight, it’s the NL wild card game, which features San Francisco at Pittsburgh.
