Irlene Mandrell headlines free Hanceville concert Saturday

Skies should be blue and feet should be tapping this Saturday when Hanceville welcomes one of country’s most famous last names to town for a free outdoor concert.

Irlene Mandrell, the youngest of the Mandrell sisters and a former regular on TV’s Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters as well as Hee Haw, will headline the free event in the city’s downtown.

Also performing ahead of Mandrell Saturday will be Nashville recording artist Vicki Lynn Maxwell, followed by former Confederate Railroad member Cody McCarver. Both the concert and an artist meet-and-greet beforehand will be held at the parking lot between Commercial Street and City Hall.

Limited seating will be provided, but organizers are encouraging everyone to treat the event as a family-friendly, bring-your-own lawn chair (or beach blanket) affair. Commercial Street will shut down for the duration of both the show and the meet-and-greet, which kicks off at 2 p.m.

Nearby restaurants, as well as the Hanceville Drug soda fountain, will stay open during the show. And since admission is completely free, there’ll be plenty of time to stroll around the corner for a quick bite to eat before dropping back in to catch more of the music.

The younger sister of country duo Barbara and Louise Mandrell, Irlene Mandrell appeared with her sisters in the early 1980s on the siblings’ country-themed TV variety show. From there she went on to a regular stint as one of the famous Hee Haw Honeys, and has since enjoyed a lengthy solo career as a country artist.

The concert gets started when Vicki Lynn Maxwell takes the stage around 4 p.m., and will run into the evening. “This is a family-friendly show; no alcohol or anything like that, and the idea is just to bring your family; bring your kids, and come out and have a good time,” said Hanceville mayor Kenneth Nail.

“The city is providing security and helping with traffic, and it should just be a fun and free event that everyone can enjoy. We’re really excited to be welcoming these talented folks to Hanceville.”
