WEST POINT — Last season, West Point’s playoff hopes were dashed at the hands of Brewer.
The Warriors returned the favor on Friday night.
Dawson Smith scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:48 remaining, Chance Aldridge recorded a pick-six with less a minute left and West Point earned a spot in the postseason following a 27-13 home victory against the Patriots.
The Maroon and White improved to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in Class 5A, Region 8 following the victory.
“I’m so proud for the kids and coaches,” West Point coach Don Farley said. “They’ve all worked hard. The kids have done everything we’ve asked them to do all season. It’s been up and down, but they’ve kept working. We overcame some stuff tonight and just kept making plays.”
West Point trailed 7-6 at halftime — a pair of Omar Segundo field goals the lone offense.
Brewer (3-6, 2-4) scored early in the third quarter after the Warriors fumbled the opening kickoff to go up 13-6, but it was all West Point from there.
Hunter Hensley’s 35-yard touchdown run with 3:34 left in the stanza tied the matchup and that score held until Smith’s 10-yard TD scamper late in the fourth period.
Then — with the Patriots driving — Aldridge played a throwback screen pass perfectly and ran undisturbed to the end zone, where he was eventually swarmed by celebrating teammates.
“That last drive the coaches saw a couple of things and went with another play out of the same set,” Farley said. “Dawson came in after a big run by Ollie (Howell) and had a great run. He hasn’t had a lot of totes, but he’s been unselfish all season and gotten reps in practice. He’s played where we’ve needed him to play all season, whether that’s been defensive line or linebacker. Tonight, we needed him at running back.
“With Chance, he’s just a 10th-grader. But he’s the kind of corner you like. We’ve seen him makes plays like that in practice and in junior varsity games, so it was good to see him get that in a big spot. It was fun to watch. I also thought Hunter made some big throws and had some big runs for us. Just really proud of the kids.”
Farley, who’s stepping down at the end of the season, has led West Point to the playoffs six times in 11 years.
The Warriors are off next week before heading to No. 2 Ramsay for the opening round.
“If you aren’t in the postseason, you’ve got zero chance to win,” Farley said. “It’s a new season in the first round. It’ll be big for the team coming back next year to get that playoff experience, too. Regardless of what happens, I’m just so proud for the community, school, players, coaches, cheerleaders, band. It’s exciting to get back.”
