PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Local squads carry momentum into Week 4

Published 3:59 pm Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Give it up for our local football programs.

Over the past two weeks, the nine teams in The Times’ coverage area have compiled a 12-6 record — that includes a county vs. county clash — and all but two of those squads have garnered at least one region win during that stretch.

Let’s hope that momentum carries over into a tough Week 4 slate.

Before we begin, though, remember to cast your vote in “The People’s Pick,” a series of Twitter polls posted on my timeline (@winfreyjake) each and every Monday afternoon.

It’s time to make predictions, which I’ve been very bad at this season.

Class 2A, Region 7

Sheffield (3-1, 2-0) at Addison (2-2, 0-1): The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back on Friday night.

Addison, which dropped its region opener against Red Bay last week, needs a victory over Sheffield to avoid its first 0-2 start in region play since 2015.

Sheffield, meanwhile, enters this matchup with wins over Wilson, Tharptown and Hatton.

But none of those squads is better than the Bulldogs, who I think will indeed bounce back at home.

% My Pick: Addison

% People’s Pick: Addison (59 percent — 105 votes)

Class 2A, Region 5

Aliceville (2-1, 2-0) at Cold Springs (3-1, 2-0): This will be a tough one for the Eagles.

The No. 8 Yellow Jackets have crushed Sulligent (43-6) and Tarrant (29-0) over the past two weeks, and their only loss so far this season came to 3A No. 3 Gordo (21-20) in overtime.

Cold Springs will need a big-time performance on Friday night to pull off the upset.

Aliceville leads the all-time series 3-0.

% My Pick: Aliceville

% People’s Pick: Cold Springs (57 percent — 107 votes)

Non-Region Game

Albertville (1-2) at Cullman (2-2): Don’t look now, but the Bearcats have claimed two straight wins.

And that number should climb to three following Friday night’s matchup against the Aggies.

Albertville has dropped two straight contests — scoring a combined 20 points in the process — and has lost its previous two meetings against Cullman 21-0 (2018) and 31-9 (2017).

I know, I know … different teams, different years.

Having said that, I’m expecting a very similar result.

% My Pick: Cullman

% People’s Pick: Cullman (83 percent — 132 votes)

Class 4A, Region 7

Fairview (3-1, 2-0) at Priceville (2-1, 2-0): The Aggies enter Friday night’s region matchup on fire.

Fairview has won three straight and is looking to take another step toward a potential region crown.

The Bulldogs, however, won’t be an easy out.

They’ve netted 43 and 42 points, respectively, in victories against St. John Paul II and Randolph.

And, according to the Decatur Daily, running back Jerry Burton surpassed 200 yards in both wins.

The Aggies, though, do lead the all-time series 5-0 and have outscored Priceville 233-39.

Expect a much closer game this time around.

% My Pick: Fairview

% People’s Pick: Fairview (77 percent — 151 votes)

Class 4A, Region 5

Good Hope (4-0, 1-0) at Oak Grove (1-3, 1-1): The No. 5 Raiders are also on a roll — one that will likely not slow on Friday night.

Although the Tigers crushed Curry 48-20 last week, they had been outscored 91-7 in three contests prior to that.

Additionally, Tanner Malin and Colton Bagwell are playing too well to let Good Hope slip up here.

The Raiders will move to 5-0.

% My Pick: Good Hope

% People’s Pick: Good Hope (95 percent — 109 votes)

Class 3A, Region 5

Vinemont (1-2, 0-1) at Hanceville (2-2, 1-1): It’s the Eagles vs. the Bulldogs at Ray Talley Stadium.

Both teams are coming off losses, and both teams will be desperate to claim a win — plus bragging rights — in this county contest on Friday night.

If you happen to attend this game, say hi to me — I’ll also be there.

But also expect a close one.

The past four meetings have all been decided by eight points or less.

Hanceville has won two, and Vinemont has won two.

Give me … the road team.

% My Pick: Vinemont

% People’s Pick: Hanceville (56 percent — 124 votes)

Class 3A, Region 5

% Fultondale (2-1, 2-0) at Holly Pond (1-3, 1-1): The Broncos, like Cold Springs, have a tough one.

The Wildcats have won 20 straight region outings and are 3-0 all-time against Holly Pond since 2015.

The Broncos will need to click on all cylinders in order to take down Fultondale on Friday night.

% My Pick: Fultondale

% People’s Pick: Fultondale (86 percent — 97 votes)

Class 5A, Region 7

West Point (2-2, 1-1) at Russellville (3-0, 2-0): The Warriors will hit the road again on Friday night.

And, you guessed it, they’ll face a tough task in the No. 5 Golden Tigers.

Russellville, which leads the all-time series 7-0, has bested Deshler, Corner and Hayden this season and is one of the favorites — along with No. 1 Jasper — to win the region.

But don’t count out a rapidly improving West Point team.

% My Pick: Russellville

% People’s Pick: Russellville (79 percent — 104 votes)

% My Record: 22-11

% People’s Record: 23-9-1
