GOOD HOPE — Good Hope’s storybook season didn’t come to an end on Friday night.
Instead, Matt Dixon and the Raiders simply wrote another chapter — one they’ll look back on for many years to come.
Dixon racked up 150 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, Good Hope grabbed three fourth-quarter interceptions and the No. 9 Raiders defeated No. 2 Jacksonville 27-12 in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, earning a spot in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1997.
Good Hope improved to 11-1 following the victory.
“We’re very thankful,” coach Alan Scott said. “These guys keep making the most of every opportunity they’re given. They’re looking directly in front of them. They’re focused. We’re playing well as a team. I’m just so excited for them.”
Dixon put the Raiders in front 7-0 midway through the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Isaiah Green followed that up with a 36-yard scoring scamper on the home team’s next possession to make it 14-0.
Good Hope secured its final touchdown of the first half — Dixon galloped 19 yards into the end zone — just two plays after a bad snap on a Jacksonville punt attempt set up Scott’s squad at the 20-yard line late in the second stanza.
The Golden Eagles got on the board just before halftime, cutting their deficit to 20-6 following a 4-yard touchdown run by Ron Wiggins.
Jacksonville, though, misplayed a squib kick to open the second half, and the Raiders recovered the loose ball.
Good Hope made the road team pay for its mistake.
On third-and-goal from the 19-yard line, quarterback Bailey Quick found Dixon for a 19-yard touchdown toss, handing the Red and White a commanding 27-6 lead.
“That moment was critical,” Scott said. “We weren’t necessarily trying to recover an onside kick, but we didn’t want to kick it to them, either. Cameron Twilley did a great job falling on the ball. He told the coaches he was going to do that, so props to him. Jacksonville is such a good team. To go up that much, I was very thankful.”
The Golden Eagles made it a two-score affair following a 33-yard touchdown pass from Luke Jackson to Jewels Gray on their initial drive of the third quarter.
Then Good Hope’s defense made its presence felt in a huge way.
The Raiders forced a punt before Preston Bagwell, Dixon and Riley Kilpatrick recorded interceptions on three straight Jacksonville possessions to seal the win inside James W. Shabel Stadium.
The unit allowed just 216 total yards.
Wiggins, who entered the contest with nearly 2,500 rushing yards this season, had just 53 yards on 14 carries.
“Obviously, we had No. 4 circled,” Scott said. “He’s their difference-maker. For us to hold him to that was beyond my wildest dreams. Every film I’ve got on him, he breaks a long run or two. The defense played lights out.”
Quick completed 7 of 9 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Dixon compiled four receptions for 98 yards and a score. Bagwell, Green and Jager Burns provided one catch apiece.
Green, meanwhile, tossed in 44 yards and a touchdown on just four carries.
Good Hope totaled 351 yards of offense against the Golden Eagles, who finished their season at 11-1 overall.
Jackson was 11-of-23 through the air for 174 yards, a touchdown and the three interceptions.
Gray had five catches for 55 yards and a score.
The Raiders will travel to Oneonta (9-3) next Friday night. The Redskins defeated D.A.R. 56-20 to advance.
“We’re definitely going to enjoy this win,” Scott said. “But I watched film (on Oneonta) in preparation for this particular game. Oneonta was up on Jacksonville before losing. It’s a team that’s very capable and explosive. At this point in the season, everybody’s good. We’ll go back to work on Monday and get ourselves prepared.”
