ADDISON — With its season on the line, Addison went back to the basics on Friday night.
The Bulldogs put together a six-minute scoring drive to open the fourth quarter and end Ranburne’s hopes with a 26-15 victory at A.G. Hicks Field.
Nine of the 10 plays on the drive came on the ground with Zayne Guthrie and Weston Smith leading the charge.
“It’s what we had to do,” Addison coach David Smothers said. “It was good to see the offense able to help us there and keep them off the field, because they had some momentum there.”
With the win, the Class 2A Bulldogs earned a spot in the quarterfinals for the third straight season. Addison (10-2) returns home for the third straight week next Friday with a matchup against Aliceville.
“That’s huge,” Smothers said of having the home-field advantage in the postseason.
Guthrie rushed for 127 yards, including a pair of 5-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown runs, on 22 carries. He also completed 7 of 10 passes for 81 yards.
Addison built a 12-0 first-half lead on Friday.
The Bulldogs scored on their first possession. Smith delivered the key play on the drive, breaking free for a 24-yard run that put Addison in business at the Ranburne 26-yard line. Smith capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, giving Addison a 6-0 lead with 5:09 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs added their second score on the third play of the second quarter when Caleb Crider scored from 2 yards out for a 12-0 lead with 10:48 left in the first half.
Ranburne (9-3) finally broke through at the 1:11 mark on a Jake Burson 5-yard run. The extra point cut the Addison lead to 12-7.
The score remained the same until the fourth quarter. Addison took possession of the ball at the 11:43 mark of the frame, driving 47 yards in 6:01. By the time the drive ended on Guthrie’s first 5-yard touchdown dash, Addison led 18-7 with just 5:41 remaining.
Ranburne didn’t go down easily, scoring its second touchdown with 2:50 left on a 6-yard pass from Joshua Ralston to Burson, making the score 18-15.
The visiting Bulldogs attempted an onside kick that was grabbed by Addison’s Trace Thompson.
Addison went back to work on the ground with a 21-yard run by Crider and an 11-yard run by Guthrie, who capped the drive with a 5-yard scoring run with 53 seconds left. He connected with Logan Wilkins on the 2-point conversion.
Addison’s defense stopped three Ranburne drives with interceptions. Wilkins picked off a pass at the 1-yard line in the second quarter, Luke Chambers intercepted a pass and returned it 22 yards in the third quarter and Jorge Smith intercepted a pass on the last play of the game.
