Five local cross country teams garnered their respective sectional crowns on Thursday, while numerous area runners — including four sectional champions — also qualified for next week’s state meet following speedy showings on the trails.

Cold Springs (Class 1A/2A — Section 2) and Cullman (Class 6A — Section 5) swept the team titles at their respective meets, while St. Bernard’s boys (Class 3A — Section 4) earned their 11th straight sectional title.

Holly Pond’s boys (second), Vinemont’s boys (second), West Point’s boys (tied third) and Holly Pond’s girls (third) will join those squads in Moulton.

Ethan Edgeworth (Cold Springs), Andrue Barnett (Cullman), Brady Johnson (Vinemont) and Mabry Free (Cullman), meanwhile, won their respective races.

The top four squads in each sectional — as well as the top six runners not tied to those teams — advance to the state meet, which will take place next Saturday at the Oakville Indian Mounds.
