DECATUR — Success isn’t just for the big kids.

Cullman’s 11-and-under girls club soccer team came away with four victories and a Division II state championship over the weekend against some very formidable foes.

The Raptors defeated the Decatur Raptors 2-1, the Huntsville Futbol Club 3-1, the Homewood Freedom 5-1 and the Vestavia Attack 8-0 to take the crown.

“I’m very proud of what the girls accomplished in their first year with club ball,” coach Jacob Brown said. “They have all worked hard. We’re very excited about the future.”

Team members include Jetta Falcon, Mercy Van Dyke, Ava Woods, Madisyn Meharg, Kinsey McBrayer, Kendall Seal, Piper Watson, Sasha Peterson, Abigail Lawson, Addie Echols, Lillian Willoughby, Gracie Barksdale and Tatum Nixon.

Tryouts for next year’s 9U, 10U, 11U and 12U squads will be held May 18-23. The program is transitioning to the Birmingham’s United Soccer Association this fall.

Fairview’s Trey Hanvey is headed to Mobile.

The Aggie senior fired a 71 in Monday’s sub-state round at Sylacauga Country Club to earn a place in next week’s state tournament at Robert Trent Jones at Magnolia Grove.

Hanvey’s team, meanwhile, fell just short of qualifying — finishing in third place (323) behind Guntersville (311) and Russellville (315).

Only the top two teams and individuals from each sub-state tourney advanced, contrary to the three that made it from either category in seasons past.

Hunter McKelvy (82), Hunter Whitehead (84) and James Arnold (86) helped the Class 5A Aggies to a strong showing.

“I’m extremely proud of how we have played all year and the character of our team,” coach Kurt Knight said. “We have had a great year, and we plan on finishing strong with Trey in Mobile.”

Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust (79) came just one spot short of joining his fellow-rival Hanvey at the state tourney in 3A, finishing third as a Bronco individual.

Meanwhile, in 6A, Cullman’s Luke Wilson (76) came up short in his bid for a state appearance at Cypress Lakes County Club, ending a fine season for the Bearcat golfer. The cutoff was 71.

Cullman graduate Jake Tucker secured a spot on the All-Sun Belt Men’s Conference Team as a second-teamer on Monday.

The Troy University golfer is third on the squad with a 73.45 stroke average and has finished in the top 25 at six tournaments this season.

He, along with the rest of the Trojans, will head to New Haven, Conn., and Yale University for the NCAA Regionals May 14-16. The top five squads from the 14-team field will qualify for the national tourney.
