- BUSA Cullman's U12 club team poses for a picture after taking second at the Birmingham Bash over the weekend.
The BUSA (Birmingham United Soccer Association) Cullman girls club teams produced another championship at a high-level tournament over the weekend, securing one title and one runner-up result at the Birmingham Bash.
The event featured more than 200 squads from all over the Southeast.
The U11 girls clinched their second crown in as many weeks after surviving a penalty kick shootout in the semis and topping the Fusion Futbol Club 05 from Gadsden in the championship.
In the semifinals, Cullman made four penalty kicks and saw its goal keeper block two attempts to settle a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation and sneak past a tough team from Tennessee.
The U11 squad’s pool play wins came against Trussville United 05 and the Mississippi Impact 05.
The U12 girls clinched their pool play opener with a last-second goal off a corner kick against Mississippi Impact 04 and followed it with a victory over Birmingham’s BUSA Elite Red.
Cullman advanced to the finals with a 1-0 shutout of Fusion Futbol Club 04 but feel to Tennessee Soccer Club Elite 04 in a tough and physical title tilt.
The U10 girls reached the semifinals against competition from Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
The BUSA Cullman club will stick with state league games the rest of the month and then take some time off for the holidays before returning in February to prepare for the state tournament. The U11 and U12 squads are currently second in their divisions in state league play.
“I am so proud of what our girls accomplished this weekend against some quality teams,” said Jacob Brown, who doubles as the coach of BUSA Cullman and Cullman High’s varsity girls. “They have been working very hard over the last few months and all the hard work is paying off.”
